First published in 1817, Biographia Literaria is Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s most significant prose work—a "literary life" that blends autobiography, philosophy, and aesthetic theory. It is famously the site of Coleridge’s disagreement with William Wordsworth over the nature of poetic language.
The work is best known for introducing two of the most influential concepts in literary history: the "willing suspension of disbelief" and the distinction between "Fancy" and "Imagination" (Primary and Secondary). Coleridge argues that the Secondary Imagination is a "shaping and modifying power" that dissolves and diffuses to create new unity, a hallmark of the Romantic movement. This book remains a foundational text for anyone studying the philosophy of art and the mechanics of the creative mind.
